Okemos won the battle for bragging rights in Meridian Township with a convincing 3:0 win over rival East Lansing on Wednesday night (10/13/04). While East Lansing saw most of the ball in the first half, Okemos went ahead on the scoreboard just before halftime with a goal by Omar El-Hussieny. The 2nd half saw more spirited play on both sides with Okemos getting goals from Mike Smith, on a beautiful assist from David Brogan, and an unassisted goal by Scott Branta to seal the win for the Chieftons. Okemos wins the CAAC Division 1 title outright while East Lansing drops to 16-2-4 on the season.

Final score: Okemos 3, E. Lansing 0
Okemos record: 17-1-1

WLNS Channel 6 in Lansing has chosen OHS Varsity Boys Soccer forward Mike Smith as their Player of the Week. Mike, along with his coaches, was interviewed on Channel 6 at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004 and received the honor graciously. Congratuations to Mike and his family for this award.


Okemos to Play in CAAC Final Game After Impressive 7:2 Win over Grand Ledge

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer defeated a pesky Grand Ledge team in the CAAC Semifinal game. Okemos started strong with a run up the left wing by Mike Smith and a ball played right across the GL goal mouth before the ball was cleared back into the Okemos half. Fareed Jamalifaard played a nice ball into the GL box but the GL keeper made a nice save in goal to block a shot from Trevor Miller. Andrew Ley played a long ball into the GL box that Josh White headed into the area but it was scooped up by the GL goalie. Alex Potter played a long ball up the left wing that Mike Smith got to before the ball was knocked out by a GL defender.

On the resulting corner kick, Eric Dow was tripped inside the box and Okemos were awarded a penalty kick. David Brogan took the PK and put Okemos ahead with a nice goal.

But Grand Ledge came right back and equalized on a header off a free kick that found the corner of the net. The game began to get physical and there were a lot of fouls called. Josh White’s header off a David Brogan free was saved by the GL keeper as Okemos continued to control play at both ends. Will Armstrong played a ball into the center of the GL end before Scott Branta’s shot flew wide of the mark. Trevor Miller held the ball well before passing back to Fareed Jamalifaard’s shot missed on the right. Trevor Miller played the ball back across the goal but Eric Dow was unable to find the net with a nice header. David Brogan shot from the right-hand side but the GL keeper made the save. Grand Ledge got another free kick on an Okemos foul at midfield and Steven Topper stepped up to collect the ball at the edge of his box. Fareed Jamalifaard, Josh White, and Alex Potter worked to steal the ball deep in the GL end but Trevor Miller’s shot was saved by the GL goalie. Fareed played a great diagonal ball that Pat Rawsthorne ran onto and crossed into the GL box but the ball was cleared by a GL defender. David Brogan played a free kick into the GL box that was headed just wide of the net by Eric Dow as the half ended.

The 2nd half got underway with Okemos continuing to control play in the midfield. Okemos had an early chance when Mike Smith dribbled up the left wing but his shot was wide of the net. Mike forced a very good save from the GL keeper with a hard shot from the left-hand side. Grand Ledge packed their players in the box but Okemos continued to get good scoring chances as the game grew more physical. David Brogan’s free kick found the head of Mike Smith and then the foot of Josh White before it ended up in the back of the net. Omar El-Hussieny headed the ball and Alex Potter took it at midfield before dribbling through several GL defenders but the keeper dove on the ball preventing a score. Pat Rawsthorne made a nice run up the left wing and crossed the ball before Mike Smith got off a wicked shot that beat the GL keeper from the close post.

On another GL foul, David Brogan’s free kick found Josh White’s head and Okemos scored again. But GL found their own attack and won a corner kick and a goal after an initial save by Steven Topper at close range. Okemos came right back with their own goal on a corner kick and a header from Mike Smith. Josh White played a long ball into the box that hit the post and was pushed into the net by Zach Hudson. Mike Smith played a nice ball forward for Zach but his shot was saved by the GL keeper. Mike got off another hard shot from close range but the GL keeper again made the save in net. Josh White then dribbled into the GL half and passed the ball to Josh Peters who dribbled through most of the GL defense and blasted a shot into the left corner of the net. Steven Topper stepped up to grab a ball played into the Okemos box but the GL defense cleared the ball out of play. Omar El-Hussieny took another free kick for Okemos before Pat Gietzen had a go from long range that was high of the net as the game ended.

Okemos Finishes Regular Season with 5:1 Win Over Saginaw Heritage

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer finished their regular season with a win against a very tough Saginaw Heritage team on Saturday, October 9, 2004.

The game got underway on a bright but windy autumn morning with Okemos pushing into the Heritage end of the field. Fareed Jamalifaard won the ball on the left wing and crossed the ball into the Saginaw box where Mike Smith’s shot was blocked by a defender. Zach Hudson won the ball at midfield and played a ball forward for Mike Smith to run onto but the Saginaw defense cleared it. Alex Potter took a corner kick for Okemos and Mike Smith passed the ball to Trevor Miller whose shot was pushed out of play. Okemos continued to control play and keep the ball in the Saginaw end. Off a throw in, Trevor Miller dribbled up the right wing before crossing the ball into the box. Then David Brogan played a ball up the left wing to Fareed Jamalifaard who slid past a Heritage defender and played a beautiful ball right across the goal mouth. Saginaw struggled to clear the ball and Fa again crossed the ball this time to Trevor Miller whose shot was saved in the Saginaw goal.

Saginaw finally got the ball in the Okemos end with a ball played forward that Steven Topper scooped up just before an attacker claimed it. After an Okemos foul at midfield, a free kick made it all the way to Topper in goal before it was cleared back into the Saginaw end. Will Armstrong found Alex Potter who dribbled between two Heritage defenders before being brought down just outside the 18-yard box. Josh White headed a ball for Jonathon Cantu but the Saginaw defense cleared it off their line. Fareed Jamalifaard then played a nice ball forward that Zach Hudson ran onto and crossed into the box. But a defender deflected the ball out of play just before Mike Smith could head it into the goal. Mike got another scoring chance off a nice header that was saved by the Saginaw keeper. Josh White took a ball at midfield and dribbled deep into the Saginaw half before passing off to Mike Smith, who played it back to Josh but his shot was saved by the Saginaw keeper. Saginaw got another free kick and a balled played into the Okemos box was shot and saved by Steven Topper, but a Heritage player got the loose ball and scored. Okemos came right back on attack and almost scored the equalizer off a free kick taken by David Brogan and a shot from Scott Branta that flew just wide of the net. Zach Hudson then played a quick ball forward which Mike Smith ran onto but the keeper deflected his shot and it flew just wide of the far post as the first half ended.

The 2nd half saw more spirited play from both sides and Okemos worked hard to even the score. Saginaw saw an early scoring chance when one of their midfielders dribbled deep into the Okemos half before his cross was scooped up by Steven Topper. Scott Branta crossed the ball at the other end of the field before it was cleared out of play by a Heritage defender. Alex Potter then crossed a ball into the box that was headed by Trevor Miller and hit the far post. Josh White headed a ball off a throw in that Scott Branta shot into the back of the net to equalize for Okemos. Josh White almost created another scoring chance when he again headed a ball across the goal mouth but it was saved by the Saginaw keeper. Mike Smith played a nice ball forward that Alex Potter ran onto up the left wing and then Alex shot wide of the net as Okemos continued to press for a goal. Mike Smith dribbled into the Saginaw box and was taken down by a Heritage player awarding Okemos a penalty kick. David Brogan took the PK and calmly scored the go-ahead goal for Okemos.

Saginaw counter attacked but Eric Dow made a nice sliding tackle to win the ball back. Okemos continued to pressure the Saginaw players forcing turnovers but Heritage played a long ball into the Okemos box forcing Steven Topper to step up and send it back into the Saginaw half. Fareed Jamalifaard took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that was saved by the Heritage keeper. Omar El-Hussieny had a shot go just wide of the net on a nice pass from David Brogan. Continuous pressure on the part of the Okemos forwards paid off when Omar El-Hussieny blocked a clearance and Scott Branta dribbled past a defender and beat the keeper with a nice shot into the corner of the net. Steven Topper made a save in goal at the other end and Okemos were again on the attack. Mike Smith scored off a nice header from a corner kick and Josh White stole the ball deep in the Okemos box before clearing it out. The Okemos back line showed crisp passing and the ball was reversed before Alex Potter dribbled past several defenders and getting into the box before the ball was played behind for a corner kick. Josh Peters scored off a header for Okemos and then won the ball in midfield before passing back to David Shaheen. Steven Topper came out of goal to scoop up a ball inside the box before laying it off to Eric Dow. Pat Gietzen held the ball in the corner of the field as time ran down and the game ended.

Final score: Okemos 5, Saginaw Heritage 1

Okemos Defeats Lansing Everett 6:0 in CAAC Tournament Quarterfinal Game

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer defeated CAAC opponent Lansing Everett High School in the first round of the CAAC tournament. The game got underway on a bright autumn afternoon with Okemos controlling play and passing the ball from the midfield up the wings. Zach Hudson crossed the ball in to Scott Branta whose shot was blocked by the Everett keeper. After the ball was not cleared, Scott was brought down by the Everett goalie resulting in an Okemos Penalty Kick. Trevor Miller converted the kick to give Okemos their first goal of the match. Jonathon Cantu made a nice run up the right wing but his cross was out of play. Trevor Miller won a ball at midfield and took a long shot that flew over the net as Okemos continued to get scoring chances. Steven Topper stepped up to catch a headed ball inside the Okemos box and Ryan O’Conner found Zach Hudson with a ball forward. Trevor Miller crossed the ball in to Omar El-Hussieny whose header flew wide of the net. Will Armstrong then crossed the ball to Josh White who scored a nice goal beating the Everett keeper at the far post.

Omar El-Hussieny then found Zach Hudson whose header slid out of play behind the net. Pat Rawsthorne crossed a nice ball into the Everett box but Zach Hudson was unable to connect on a shot in front of goal. Pat Rawsthorne again crossed the ball from the right wing and Omar El-Hussieny’s header was saved by the Everett keeper. Omar continued to wreak havoc on the Everett defense taking on defenders before the ball was cleared out of play. Alex Potter played a fine ball forward that Pat Gietzen ran onto before crossing the ball into the box. Alex Potter and Pat Gietzen combined again for a run up the left wing with Pat crossing the ball to Ryan O’Conner whose header was wide of the net. Alex Potter then played a through ball forward to Omar El-Hussieny who dribbled past two Everett defenders and scored for Okemos. Eric Dow dribbled into the Everett end and crossed a ball that Pat Gietzen was unable to make contact with on the edge of the box. Okemos continued to control play at both ends of the field before Steven Topper scooped up a ball inside his box and cleared it back into the Everett end. Zach Hudson crossed a ball into the Everett box and Scott Branta’s header flew just over the net as the first half ended.

The 2nd half started much like the first, with Okemos controlling play in the midfield and constantly pushing forward on attack. Zach Hudson made a run up the right wing getting past the Everett defender before crossing the ball into the box. After a scramble Mike Smith found the ball at his feet and blasted a shot into the back of the net. Trevor Miller had a go from just outside the 18-yard box that flew wide of the net as Okemos continued to pressure the Everett defense. Mike Smith found Alex Potter whose run up the left wing resulted in a shot that was saved by the Everett keeper. Mike Smith shot was deflected but not cleared and Trevor Miller shot was saved in the Everett goal. Eric Dow crossed the ball into the box and Mike Smith collided with the Everett keeper before the ball was played forward. Josh White won the ball in midfield and Okemos pressed forward with their attack. Andrew Ley played a great ball forward that Mike Smith ran onto and beat the keeper with a nice left-footed goal for Okemos. Jason Storey played a ball forward on a quick Okemos counter attack and Jonathon Cantu found Scott Branta but his shot was wide of the mark.

David Brogan dribbled past an Everett defender but his shot was saved by the goalie. David Shaheen crossed the ball to Omar El-Hussieny whose header hit the cross bar. Jason Storey crossed a ball in to Jonathon Cantu but his shot was high of the net. Steven Topper scooped up a ball inside his box and Okemos were again on attack. Josh White played a long ball up the right wing that Pat Gietzen ran onto but his shot was wide. Ryan O’Conner dribbled through a slew of Everett players and then laid a nice ball off for Jonathon Cantu but his soft shot was saved by the Everett goalie. Jon had another scoring chance off a corner kick taken by Pat Gietzen but his header found the Everett keeper. Omar El-Hussieny scored a nice unassisted goal on a floating shot that found the corner of the net as the game ended.

Final score: Okemos 6, Lansing Everett 0

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer capped off their CAAC regular season unbeaten with a win away at Holt High School on Monday night. Okemos had an early scoring chance with a nice run up the right wing by Zach Hudson that was pushed out of play. Josh White played a long ball that Mike Smith ran onto before the ball was played out by a Holt defender. Steven Topper stepped up to grab a ball played into the Okemos box and a Holt midfielder leveled Pat Rawsthorne earning Okemos a free kick. Josh White headed a ball right in front of goal but Alex Potter was unable to reach it before it went out of play. Alex then won a ball deep in the Holt end and found Mike Smith whose cross was shot by Fareed Jamalifaard and blocked by a Holt defender. Pat Rawsthorne played a ball up to David Brogan whose shot was just wide of the far post. Fareed Jamalifaard then made a nice run up the right wing, lost his defender and crossed the ball into the Holt box.

Mike Smith headed the ball past the Holt keeper and scored for Okemos. Mike then had another scoring chance that was high of the net as Okemos continued on attack. David Brogan then played a through ball that was scooped up by the Holt keeper. Alex Potter crossed a ball that eventually found the foot of Zach Hudson but his shot hit the crossbar. A shot by Josh White after the Holt defense failed to clear the ball flew over the net. Holt won a free kick and Steven Topper leaped up to catch the ball and Okemos was back on attack. Will Armstrong headed a ball back for Steven Topper as Holt got some of their players forward. Ryan O’Conner stepped up to steal a ball played deep inside the Okemos end. At the Holt end, Josh White fed the ball to Fareed Jamalifaard who dribbled past a Holt defender before letting a shot go from outside the 18-yard box. The shot was wide of the net but Fa created the next scoring chance for Okemos with another run up the right wing and a cross that Mike Smith blasted into the back of the net. Holt got their own scoring chance on a run up the right wing and a cross that was cleared out of play by Andrew Ley. A long shot by a Holt forward was saved in net by Steven Topper. Josh White then played a long ball forward that Mike Smith ran onto, eluding two Holt defenders, and beating the Holt keeper far post for another Okemos goal. Okemos kept the pressure on when David Brogan dribbled into the Holt box before his shot was saved by the keeper.

David had another go with a long shot on a ball that was not cleared by the Holt defense that slid wide of the net. Okemos almost scored again on a glancing header from Alex Potter that was eventually cleared by the Holt defense. A long ball played forward by a Holt midfielder was scooped up by Steven Topper and launched back into the Holt half. Omar El-Hussieny then held the ball up nicely and Fareed Jamalifaard ran onto it playing it forward for Mike Smith. But Smitty’s shot was wide of the net as the first half ended.

The 2nd half saw more solid passing and scoring chances for Okemos players. The game became more physical as players from both sides fought for every loose ball. Mike Smith almost scored again for Okemos when he took a ball deep inside the Holt box and managed a shot that beat the keeper but the ball went just wide of the net. Steven Topper made a diving save in goal, pushing a ball wide as Holt stepped up their attack. Andrew Ley, Will Armstrong, Josh White, and Pat Rawsthorne each provided solid support on defense stifling Holt attacks. Mike Smith scored a nice goal from inside the box on a ball played forward by Fareed Jamalifaard after beating two Holt defenders and then the keeper. Okemos continued to control the ball, reversing the field and pushing in the Holt end as the game ended.

Final score: Okemos 4, Holt 0

Another beautiful evening on the OHS soccer pitch and two more wins for our teams. Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer celebrated senior night with an impressive win vs. CAAC opponent Lansing Sexton High School. Okemos got on the scoreboard early when Andrew Ley crossed the ball into the Sexton box and Josh White found the back of the net. Okemos scored another quick goal when David Brogan played a nice ball forward to Pat Gietzen who crossed it to Scott Branta who calmly pushed it in for a score.

The Sexton keeper made a number of good saves in goal to keep the game close as Okemos dominated play at both ends. Josh Peters passed the ball to Mike Smith but the Sexton defense collapsed and cleared the ball. A shot by David Brogan was saved by the Sexton keeper as Okemos continued to get scoring chances. Zach Hudson made a nice run up the right wing but his shot flew wide of the net. A shot from Mike Smith at close range was saved by the Sexton goalie and a cross from Zach Hudson just missed the head of Jonathon Cantu. Ryan O’Conner won the ball in midfield as Sexton continued to clear their lines on defense. Zach Hudson headed a ball forward to Scott Branta but the Sexton keeper made a diving save to prevent another goal. A long shot from Pat Gietzen was parried over the bar as Okemos kept attacking the Sexton goal.

Mike Smith played a ball forward to Trevor Miller but his shot was saved by the Sexton keeper. Mike Smith almost scored after getting behind the Sexton defense but his shot was blocked by the Sexton goalie. Josh Peters then setup David Brogan but his long shot hit the post, followed by another shot from close range by Mike Smith that also was denied by the woodwork. Sexton had their first shot of the game hit the goal post when a ball was played forward to an onrushing attacker. But Sexton scored shortly afterward when a ball was played into the Okemos end and a Sexton forward ran onto it beating a diving Steven Topper in goal. A long shot from Zach Hudson was tipped over by the Sexton keeper as Okemos continued to push forward. Josh White scored for Okemos on a corner kick taken by Zach Hudson. Zach continued to wreck havoc on the Sexton right wing with another cross and a header from Alex Potter that was wide of the net. Fareed Jamalifaard stole the ball deep in the Sexton end and a shot by Josh White was corralled by the Sexton goalie. Jonathon Cantu took a ball on the left wing but his chip over the keeper went just wide of the net. Okemos had another chance to score when Pat Rawsthorne found Zach Hudson whose shot was blocked by the Sexton goalkie. Pat Rawsthorne played a beautiful ball forward to Fareed Jamalifaard who dribbled around the Sexton keeper before the ball was cleared off the line by one of their defenders and the first half came to an end.

David Brogan then found Will Armstrong wide open inside the box before Will was taken down by a Sexton defender. Okemos were awarded a penalty kick which Pat Rawsthorne took but the Sexton keeper blocked the shot and another shot from close range by Mike Smith was also blocked. Sexton counter attacked forcing a save in the Okemos goal by Steven Topper. Will Armstrong again dribbled past the Sexton defense on the left wing before crossing the ball to Mike Smith whose shot was wide of the net.

Pat Rawsthorne dribbled deep into the Sexton half and Omar El-Hussieny’s shot flew over the goal. Zach Hudson crossed a ball that the Sexton keeper missed but his defense was able to clear the ball out of play. Alex Potter came back to steal the ball on defense and he found Zach Hudson on the right wing whose cross found the head of Josh White but his shot just missed the post. Sexton got their attack going forcing a diving save in goal from Steven Topper. David Brogan then dribbled through most of the Sexton midfield before laying the ball off to Pat Gietzen who was unable to get his foot on the ball before it was cleared out of play. Pat then crossed the ball to Ryan O’Conner whose shot was wide of the net. David Brogan lofted a ball forward for Jonathon Cantu who shot over the keeper but just wide of the net. Okemos defensive players passed the ball and reversed the field before David Brogan found Scott Branta. Scott’s shot beat the Sexton keeper but was a bit wide of the mark. Zach Hudson made a nice run up the right wing before crossing the ball to Jonathon Cantu but his header flew over the net. Okemos continued to attack and a long ball from Andrew Ley bounced over the Sexton keeper and onto the head of Jonathon Cantu, but was ultimately cleared as the game ended.

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer continued their winning ways with a solid victory over Kalamazoo Central on Monday afternoon. The game got underway with an early ball played forward from David Brogan to Mike Smith who dribbled around several defenders before passing the ball back to David whose shot was blocked by a Kalamazoo player. Okemos back line players reversed the field and Josh White played a nice ball forward that Fareed Jamalifaard ran onto before passing it over to Trevor Miller whose shot flew over the net. Andrew Ley played a free kick into the Kalamazoo box and Jonathon Cantu kicked it past the Kalamazoo keeper and into the net. David Brogan won a ball in the midfield and dribbled into the box before crossing the ball to Scott Branta whose soft shot slid past the keeper for a second Okemos goal. Pat Rawsthorne dribbled up the right wing and found Zach Hudson whose cross was volleyed by Jonathon Cantu but the Kalamazoo keeper made a nice save to prevent the goal. Alex Potter played a ball into the box for Trevor Miller whose shot was saved by the Kalamazoo goalie.

Pat Rawsthorne played a nice ball forward to Scott Branta who dribbled up to the edge of the Kalamazoo goal before the keeper scooped up the ball. David Brogan again dribbled forward and crossed the ball to the feet of Jonathon Cantu but his shot was saved by the Kalamazoo keeper. Okemos continued to get good scoring chances as the ball rarely left the Kalamazoo end of the field and a shot from distance by Trevor Miller slid over the bar. Andrew Ley crossed a ball deep into the Kalamazoo box that was headed by David Brogan right to the keeper. David then dribbled past two Kalamazoo players and played a nice ball up the left wing that Ryan O’Conner ran onto before passing it back to David Brogan. Josh White headed a ball into the Kalamazoo box but the keeper stepped up to clear it and then Omar El-Hussieny took a ball up the right wing but his shot was stopped by the Kalamazoo goalie. Okemos got their third goal off a throw in that

Josh White headed to Eric Dow whose header beat the keeper and found the back of the net. Zach Hudson dribbled deep into the Kalamazoo end and crossed a nice ball to Trevor Miller but his shot slid just wide of the goal and out of play. Steven Topper came forward for a ball played into the Okemos box and cleared it before Trevor Miller crossed a ball to Zach Hudson whose shot flew over the net. Alex Potter and Fareed Jamalifaard worked a nice give-and-go before the ball was cleared out by a Kalamazoo defender and the half ended.

The 2nd half got underway with Okemos controlling play and winning a quick corner kick. After Kalamazoo got a counter attack going, Steven Topper stepped up to clear the ball back into their half. Fareed Jamalifaard played a nice ball up the right wing that Zach Hudson crossed into the box. A resulting header by Mike Smith flew just wide of the net as Okemos kept the pressure on the Kalamazoo defenders. Another pass played into the Kalamazoo box resulted in another header from Mike Smith but the goalie made a nice save to prevent another Okemos goal. David Brogan played a long ball over the Kalamazoo defense that Fareed Jamalifaard ran onto but his shot slid just wide of the mark. Trevor Miller found Mike Smith who dribbled into the Kalamazoo box and scored with a wicked shot that beat the Kalamazoo keeper.

The game grew more physical as Okemos continued to pass and penetrate deep into the Kalamazoo end. Pat Rawsthorne found Fareed Jamalifaard who was pushed off the ball resulting in an indirect free kick for Okemos. Will Armstrong pushed forward and played a through ball that was scooped up by the Kalamazoo keeper. Steven Topper came out of goal to collect a long shot and Okemos were once again on the attack. Andrew Ley won the ball in the Okemos end but was taken down from behind by a Kalamazoo player who was shown a card for the offense. The Okemos defense kept control of the ball, passing it across the field, and pushing up the wings. Fareed Jamalifaard crossed a dangerous ball into the box that was cleared by a Kalamazoo defender. two Kalamazoo defenders before his cross was corralled by their goalie. Josh White stepped up to win a 50-50 ball before passing to Eric Dow. Eric played the ball back into the center where Fareed Jamalifaard’s shot was saved by the Kalamazoo keeper. Jason Storey stepped up to clear a ball out of the Okemos half and David Shaheen kept control, passing back to one of his defenders as the game came to an end.

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer defeated CAAC opponent Jackson High School on Wednesday, September 22, 2004. The home game got started with Okemos controlling play in the midfield and a quick shot by David Brogan that was wide of the net. Fareed Jamalifaard played a nice ball through to Alex Potter who avoided a Jackson defender before winning a corner kick for Okemos. Fareed Jamalifaard passed the ball up to Mike Smith whose shot from close range was blocked by the Jackson keeper. Zach Hudson played a nice cross to Trevor Miller who passed the ball back to David Brogan but his shot was high of the goal. The game grew physical after David won a ball in the Okemos box and dribbled forward before he was brought down from behind by a Jackson player. Will Armstrong pushed into the Jackson half and played a ball back to David Brogan who crossed a ball in for Ryan O’Conner but the ball was cleared by the Jackson defense.

Fareed Jamalifaard then took a shot from about 20 yards out that was cleared off the head of a Jackson player. Jackson continued to keep 10 players inside their half working hard to block shots and not allow Okemos chances to score. The Jackson keeper made a nice save off a shot from Trevor Miller as Okemos continued to dominate play at both ends. Mike Smith took a ball from Fareed Jamalifaard and dribbled deep into the Jackson end and his shot just missed the left post. Zach Hudson played a ball forward to Fareed Jamalifaard whose shot was pushed out by the Jackson goalie and Okemos continued to get scoring opportunities. Pat Rawsthorne pushed forward into the Jackson half as Okemos moved the ball back and forth looking for an advantage. A shot from Will Armstrong on the left-hand side just outside the box didn’t miss the net by much. Trevor Miller’s shot flew wide of the net and Fareed Jamalifaard dribbled past one Jackson defender before crossing the ball to Mike Smith, but his shot just missed on the right side as the 1st half came to a close.

The 2nd half saw more patient, controlled play by Okemos and more stingy defensive play from Jackson. Okemos had an early chance when Josh White headed a ball and Trevor Miller shot but the ball was eventually cleared by a Jackson defender. Trevor appeared to have scored off a shot from an Okemos free kick but the play was whistled offside by the line judge. Mike Smith then dribbled deep into the Jackson half before letting a hard shot go that was blocked by the Jackson goalie. Okemos continued to apply pressure and control play in the Jackson box and a shot by Trevor Miller was blocked by the Jackson keeper but slid into the net off Zach Hudson. Trevor Miller made a nice turn off a ball played forward by Pat Rawsthorne and his shot did not miss the net by much. Zach Hudson then played a long ball forward to Mike Smith who managed to head the ball past the Jackson keeper but it slid just wide of the net.

Jackson had a chance to score when the referee reversed a call and awarded a free kick to Jackson. But Pat Gietzen made a fine save in net for Okemos on a breakaway that caught the Okemos players by surprise. David Brogan then had a go from outside the Jackson box but his shot was high of the net. The game got more physical as David was taken down from behind inside the box resulting in a penalty kick for Okemos. The resulting PK taken by Omar El-Hussieny hit the crossbar and the next few minutes saw scrappy play from both sides. David Brogan dribbled past several Jackson defenders before passing the ball to Scott Branta who calmly pushed the ball into the net. David Brogan then dribbled right in front but his hard shot flew just over the post. Okemos got their third goal on a nice cross from Alex Potter that Scott Branta headed past the Jackson keeper and the game ended.

Okemos Suffers First Loss of 2004 Season to Midland Dow 0:1

Okemos Varsity Boys Soccer met a team from Midland Dow H.S. on a hot and sunny September evening at the OHS field. The game started with both teams battling for possession of the ball as Will Armstrong played a ball up the right wing to Trevor Miller who found Eric Dow. Eric crossed the ball to Ryan O’Conner who played it back to David Brogan before the ball was cleared out of play by a Midland defender. The resulting throw in found Eric Dow whose shot was high of the net.

Ryan O’Conner deftly dribbled past a Midland player before playing the ball to David Brogan in the middle of the box. Scott Branta won a nice 50-50 ball and dribbled forward before playing the ball to David Brogan, who passed to Trevor Miller. Trevor drew the Midland keeper out but couldn’t get the ball over him and into the net. Midland counter attacked with a quick pass up the middle and a shot just wide of the Okemos net. Steven Topper came forward on several occasions to scoop up or clear balls played into the Okemos box as Midland continued their counter attack.

Okemos won a corner kick when Mike Smith played a nice ball forward to Ryan O’Conner before it was cleared behind the net. Josh White headed the ball directly at the Midland keeper who scooped it up and cleared it out of his end. Fareed Jamalifaard played a give-and-go before crossing the ball to Trevor Miller whose header just missed the net. Steven Topper made a save in goal on another counter attack by Midland. An Okemos free kick was corralled by the Midland keeper as the ball stayed in the Midland half. Alex Potter played a ball back to Andrew Ley whose long shot flew over the net. Okemos were patient with the ball throughout the 1st half, passing it back and forth and reversing the field. Josh White found David Brogan who dribbled past several Midland players before pushing a nice ball forward to Mike Smith. But Smitty’s shot slid over the net and the ball was again cleared back into the Okemos half. Omar El-Hussieny stole the ball and played it forward to Mike Smith but he was flagged for an offside. Then Josh White played a long ball up the left wing to Alex Potter whose cross into the box was cleared by a Midland defender as the 1st half came to an end.

The 2nd half saw more controlled play and crisp passing from Okemos. Mike Smith got an early chance when a ball was played forward and he ran onto it before passing off to Trevor Miller, whose shot was high of the mark. Fareed Jamalifaard dribbled through the Midland defense and floated a ball to Trevor Miller but a Midland defender pushed it out of play. David Brogan crossed a nice ball into the Midland box but an Okemos attacker was unable to get to it before it went over the touch line. Trevor Miller took a free kick and crossed the ball to Josh White whose header was wide of the net. After another Midland foul, Andrew Ley’s shot from long range was cradled by the Midland goalie. Alex Potter kept a ball in play and then was leveled by a Midland player when he passed it up the wing but no foul was called.

Mike Smith got off a nice header from an Okemos corner kick but the ball flew over the net. Okemos continued to keep the ball in the Midland half and won many corner kicks as they game got more physical. An Okemos corner kick slid past everyone, only needing a touch for a goal, but a shot

at the far post was wide of the net. Andrew Ley took a ball on defense and played it back into the Midland half. Pat Rawsthorne played a nice ball forward to Trevor Miller whose shot was cleared out of play. Midland continued to bunch up players in their box and clear balls played in by Okemos. A long ball played up the right wing was crossed to a Midland forward and a resulting shot flew past Steven Topper and into the Okemos net. Mike Smith got off another shot from distance that was saved by the Midland keeper. Okemos had another scoring change when Ryan O’Conner crossed a ball into the box before it was cleared out. Steven Topper came out to clear a ball on another Midland counter attack as the Midland defense got a break from the constant pressure from Okemos. Mike Smith laid off a nice ball that Josh White turned on and shot forcing a nice save in the Midland goal to prevent an equalizer. Will Armstrong took another shot that was just over the net as the seconds ticked away and the game ended.

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer played vs. Brighton High School on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Okemos. The two teams have some history, including last year's game at Brighton when Okemos knocked BHS out of the state tournament and won the district title 1:0.

Okemos controlled much of the play during the first half, with crisp passing and runs up the wings. Ryan O'Conner crossed the ball into the box but Mike Smith was unable to get a shot off as the ball was cleared by the Brighton defense. Fareed Jamalifaard crossed a ball into David Brogan but the ball slid over the touch line before he could manage a shot on goal. At the other end, Brighton took a free kick and floated a ball into the box that was corralled by Steven Topper in the Okemos goal. Another free kick saw Topper come out and collide with a Brighton player before the referee whistled a foul. Okemos got a goal off a free kick that no one seemed to touch but hit the post and found the net. Okemos got solid play from midfielder Josh White and defenders Will Armstrong, Pat Rawsthorne, and Andrew Ley.

Omar El-Hussieny held the ball up before finding David Brogan, who passed to Ryan Oconner before the ball was cleared by the Brighton defense. Brighton was awarded another free kick which Steven Topper scooped up before clearing the ball back into the Brighton half. Brighton equalized off another free kick and a header that hit the post and fell at the feet of an attacker who blasted it into the back of the net. The Brighton keeper made a nice save on a cross as the game got more physical. Okemos almost had a goal when Pat Gietzen crossed a ball and Josh White headed it back in front of the net. The ball eventually found the back of the net but the side judge ruled Okemos offside and the goal was disallowed. David Brogan dribbled through several Brighton players before passing the ball wide to Trevor Miller whose cross was taken by Alex Potter before the Brighton keeper pushed it out of play. Okemos almost scored again when Scott Branta played a ball forward for Mike Smith who beat the Brighton keeper but slid his shot just wide of the net as the 1st half ended.

Alex Potter came back to steal the ball from a Brighton midfielder and Fareed Jamalifaard took a throw in with a hard shot that hit the side of the net. On a corner kick, Mike Smith collided with the Brighton keeper before the ball was cleared. Fareed then had a go from outside the box that was blocked by a Brighton defender. Brighton had their own chance at goal but their shot just missed the post. Steven Topper made a nice save in goal for Okemos as the ball stayed in the Okemos half. Alex Potter and Mike Smith played a nice give-and-go before the ball was cleared out of play for an Okemos corner kick. Eric Dow played the ball back into the Brighton box off the corner kick before it was cleared by a Brighton defender. Okemos almost scored again off another corner kick that found the foot of Mike Smith, but his shot was saved by the Brighton keeper and cleared out of play.

Okemos kept the ball in the Brighton end for most of the rest of the game as David Brogan dribbled past two defenders before the ball was played out. Andrew Ley played a long ball forward to Mike Smith who passed up to Scott Branta before another Okemos corner kick. Alex Potter’s corner found the head of Josh White but the ball was pushed back out of the Brighton box. Brighton had another scoring chance when a free kick flew just past the right post. The Brighton defense continued to step up as Okemos kept the ball in their end. Another Okemos corner kick found Eric Dow but his shot was pushed out by the Brighton keeper. Fareed Jamalifaard dribbled up the right wing and managed yet another corner kick for Okemos as the 2nd half came to a close.

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer defeated CAAC opponent Lansing Eastern High School on September 8, 2004. The game got underway on a bright autumn afternoon with Okemos controlling play and passing the ball from the midfield up the wings. Okemos got an early change when Trevor Miller dribbled into the box but his shot was high of the net. Then Jimmy Witzel dribbled around an Eastern defender and his cross was played into the back of the net by Mike Smith to give Okemos the early lead. David Brogan took the ball inside the Eastern box but his shot was off target. Jimmy Witzel again dribbled deep into the box but his shot was also wide of the net. Mike Smith had another shot that was high and Fareed Jamalifaard played a nice ball forward to Jimmy Witzel who scored a second goal for Okemos. Zach Hudson dribbled up the right wing but his cross was cleared by the Eastern defense. Then Mike Smith dribbled into the box and blasted a shot that found the back of the net. A few minutes later, Smitty got his hat-trick on another unassisted goal.

Pat Gietzen dribbled around two Eastern defenders before crossing the ball into the box and Scott Branta got off two shots in quick succession which were high of the net. But Scott kept attacking and was awarded with a nice goal off a cross. Branta got his second of the match on another cross, this time from Josh Peters. The game grew more physical and Okemos was awarded free kicks, but the Eastern goal keeper made two fine saves. Zach Hudson scored another goal for OHS after the Eastern defense failed to clear the ball out of their box. Jon Cantu took a shot which was saved by the Eastern keeper as the first half ended.

The 2nd half saw more spirited play from both sides as Okemos continued to control play in the midfield. Solid support was provided on defense by Andrew Ley, Eric Dow, Pat Rawsthorne, and Will Armstrong. Josh White showed deft passing as Okemos continued to attack the Eastern half of the field. Eastern got their only goal of the match on a deflected shot and somehow found the back of the net. But Okemos kept pushing forward and Jon Cantu scored on a nice cross into the Eastern box. Jason Storey and David Shaheen provided support on defense and in midfield as Okemos kept possession of the ball for most of the half. Alex Potter scored a nice goal for Okemos off a corner kick as the game drew to a close.

OHS Receives #2 Ranking in Division I

Okemos High School Boys Varsity Soccer is currently ranked 2nd in Division I in the State of Michigan. The state rankings, out on labor day, represent an early indicator of the strength of Michigan high school soccer teams in all four divisions. State rankings are updated every week and can be viewed online at the Michigan High School Soccer website.

Okemos Wins vs. Saline 3:0

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer continued their winning ways by defeating Saline 3:0 on Monday night. The game got underway on the new Saline football field with Okemos controlling play throughout most of the match. Jimmy Witzel dribbled into the Saline box but his shot was saved by the Saline keeper and Mike Smith had a nice header off a cross but it missed the mark. Steven Topper came out to clear a ball in the Okemos end and Faread Jamalifaard played a beautiful cross that just missed an attacker’s foot. Alex Potter pushed the ball through to Ryan O’Connor whose shot was high of the net. But Okemos kept the ball in the Saline half and were rewarded when Faread Jamalifaard played a ball into space and Ryan O’Connor ran onto it and his shot found the net to give Okemos the lead.

Saline quickly countered with an attack and a hard shot that Steven Topper parried out of play. Will Armstrong dribbled into the Saline end and found Zach Hudson whose header was cradled by the Saline keeper. Several times, the Saline keeper came out to pounce on a ball played into his box as Okemos kept attacking. Okemos were awarded a penalty kick when Josh White dribbled into the Saline box and was pulled down by a defender. Jimmy Witzel calmly took the PK and blasted the ball into the back of the net for a two-goal lead as the first half drew to a close.

David Brogan held the ball and then passed off to Faread Jamalifaard whose shot was wide. Then Fa pushed up the right wing, dribbling past several Saline defenders, before crossing the ball to Mike Smith who blasted a shot into the net. Okemos kept the pressure on Saline when David Brogan dribbled forward before flicking a back heel pass to Jimmy Witzel whose shot was saved by the Saline goalie. Trevor Miller dribbled up the left wing and crossed a ball into the box but it was cleared by the Saline defense. Steven Topper made a nice save in goal as Saline finally got their offense going.

OHS tops Detroit Country Day 4:1

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer won their fourth game of the 2004 season by defeating Detroit Country Day 4:1 at home. A noon start on Saturday saw ball control and solid passing by Okemos with lots of chances to score in early play. David Brogan and Mike Smith each had shots saved by the DCD keeper as Jimmy Witzel and Trevor Miller controlled the midfield play.

Steven Topper stepped up to save a shot by Detroit Country Day and Pat Gietzen provided a spark for Okemos on a nice run up the right wing. Jimmy Witzel found Mike Smith who passed to Scott Branta but his shot was saved in the DCD goal.

The second half saw more domination by Okemos as Steven Topper made a save in goal and a shot by Jimmy Witzel was cradled by the DCD keeper. Josh White had a go but the DCD goalie made the save and Andrew Ley provided support in the Okemos defenseive end.

Ryan O'Connor played a nice ball over the top that Mike Smith ran onto and his chip shot found the back of the net to give Okemos the lead. Detroit Country Day came back with their own counter attack forcing a nice save by Steven Topper on a breakaway. Zach Hudson dribbled up the right wing and his cross found Scott Branta whose header slipped past the keeper and into the net. But Detroit Country Day got a goal on a free kick and a soft shot that found the Okemos net.

David Brogan got an unassisted third Okemos goal on a miscue by the DCD keeper and almost had another on a nice pass by Jimmy Witzel to Brogan that was saved by the DCD goalie. This was followed by an acrobatic save by the DCD goalie on another shot from David Brogan as Okemos continued to press on offense. Detroit Country Day counter attacked forcing another save in the Okemos goal by Steven Topper on a breakaway. Okemos almost got another goal as Mike Smith found David Brogan whose shot was blocked by the DCD keeper. Jimmy Witzel dribbled deep into the Detroit end and played a nice ball out to Mike Smith who blasted it into the net.

Okemos High School Varsity Boys Soccer won a closely contested match vs. East Lansing at the OHS field on Thursday, August 26, 2004. The game, which began on Wednesday, but was postponed due to inclement weather, finished up the following day.

The game got underway on an overcast Wednesday evening in Okemos with an early shot from EL that hit the post. Steven Topper made a save in goal as EL continued to attack. Okemos countered with a quick push up the left wing around the defender with a cross from David Brogan that found Mike Smith whose shot landed in the back of the net to give Okemos the lead. Both teams pushed forward, with solid play in midfield and on defense, as the game grew more intense.

Mike Smith had a shot that flew over the net followed by a shot from David Brogan that was saved by the EL keeper. Josh White and Pat Rathsthorne provided support on defense for Okemos before the game was postponed due to lightning. The game was restarted on Thursday afternoon with both teams looking for scoring opportunities. EL kept the ball in the Okemos end and Steven Topper made a nice save in goal before the 1st half ended.

The 2nd half saw more spirited play by both teams, with a scoring chance for Mike Smith that was cleared by the EL defense. Okemos had several more chances to score but their shots missed the mark. EL counter attacked with a shot that hit the post followed by a nice save in goal by Steven Topper.

Okemos quickly pushed forward and there was a flurry of play in front of the EL net before the ball was finally cleared out of play. Andrew Ley stepped up to clear a deep ball preventing an EL scoring chance. EL kept up the pressure, with several long throws and headers over the net, before Steven Topper made another save in the Okemos goal to keep the clean sheet.

Players from both teams kept fighting for every ball, resulting in a few yellow cards shown by the referee to EL players, as the game grew more intense and physical. An EL free kick bounced around in front of the Okemos net before one of their players shot it towards the left post. But Steven Topper dove on the ball and Okemos were again on attack.

Okemos had two shots slide wide of the net on indirect free kicks and what looked like a sure goal when Mike Smith dribbled through the EL defense and laid the ball off to David Brogan, who dribbled around the EL goalie but was unable to score. Okemos pressure and solid passing resulted in a second goal as David Brogan dribbled deep into the EL end and crossed the ball in front of the net to Ryan O’Connor whose shot found the back of the net. The game ended shortly afterward as Okemos fans celebrated the win.

OHS begins 2004 season with wins against Detroit Western and U-D Jesuit


The Okemos Varsity Boys Soccer Team got their 2004 season off to a great start winning both of their games at the U-D Jesuit on Saturday, August 21.

In their first game, OHS scored 9 goals and only allowed one in a match vs. Detroit Western. OHS got goals from Mike Smith (2), David Brogan (2), Zach Hudson, Ryan O'Connor, Trevor Miller, Scott Branta & Jimmy Witzel, with assists from Jimmy Witzel, Andew Ley, and Trevor Miller (2). In goal, Steven Topper and Pat Gietzen each had one save.

In their second game, OHS scored 4 goals vs. a solid U-D Jesuit team. OHS got goals from David Brogan (2), Zach Hudson and Jimmy Witzel, and assists from Pat Gietzen, Faread Jamalifaard, Trevor Miller & Zach Hudson. Pat Gietzen and Steven Topper had two saves each in the Okemos goal.

OHS is now 2-0-0 for the 2004 season and next up is a home game vs. East Lansing on Wednesday, August 25, at 5:30 pm.


OHS Preseason Tournaments

Andy Topper was on hand with his camera at the Holt and Saline Tournaments where OHS got off to a great start in early August, '04.
