Ben Skole taking control of the ball w/ BHS defensemen hot on his tail.

Okemos were eliminated from the 2005 state tournament in the first round of district play by their rivals, Brighton. In 2003 & 2004, Okemos had knocked Brighton out of the state tournament. But this year Brighton got their revenge by eliminating last year’s Division I state champions 1:0 at Okemos on Tuesday afternoon. An article on this match appeared in the Lansing State Journal on 10/26/05 and another was published in the Daily Press & Argus (Brighton) on the same date.

The match got underway on a cold and blustery afternoon with Okemos on the defensive early and Jason Storey (#4) stepping up to clear a ball played into the box. Alex Potter (#11) stole the ball and pushed it forward. Tony Hassan (#4) also stepped up for Okemos on defense as Brighton put early pressure on the Okemos goal but their shot was high. Brighton continued to control the ball in their midfield before Okemos were awarded a free kick. Ben Skole (#2) push deep into the Brighton half before playing the ball off to Alex Potter whose cross found Omar El-Hussieny (#10) but his shot was cleared out of play. On the resulting Okemos corner kick, taken by Phil Glaub (#12), Sam Peters (#17) had a shot from close range hit the post before the ball was cleared out of play by the Brighton defense.

Okemos kept the ball in the Brighton end as Phil Glaub got a nice cross into the box but a shot from Adam Jordan (#9) was saved by the Brighton keeper. Faread Jamalifaard (#13) showed some dribbling prowess before passing the ball to Ben Skole, but the Brighton defense again cleared the ball into touch. Brighton managed an attack of their own forcing Steven Topper to clear a ball out of his box. Brandon Brown (#22) stepped up to win the ball for Okemos before pushing it back into the Brighton half. Brighton again controlled play passing the ball around their back line and sustaining pressure on the Okemos goal. Jason Storey again stepped up for Okemos to clear a ball before Okemos won a corner kick and Alex Potter found Faread Jamalifaard whose cross was headed by Omar El-Hussieny but saved by the Brighton keeper.

Steven Topper stepped up to save a ball off a shot played into his box and Okemos counter attacked forcing another save from the Brighton keeper. Ian Sinclair (#21) provided solid play for Okemos on defense and Anthony Earley (#23) dribbled deep into the Brighton half before the ball was cleared out of play. Brighton stepped up their pressure and won most of the 50-50 balls as they continued to push into the Okemos end. Steven Topper scooped up a ball played into his box and Faread Jamalifaard played a nice give-and-go with Ian Sinclair before he crossed the ball into the Brighton box. Okemos continued to have their own scoring chances with balls crossed into the box but Brighton's defense stepped up to clear them. Ian Sinclair collided with the Brighton keeper on a ball lofted into the box and Okemos won a corner kick. But Brighton took control and pushed the ball back into the Okemos end forcing Steven Topper out to collect it before clearing it back into the Brighton half. Brighton had a scoring chance off a free kick but Steven Topper made a fine save in the Okemos net. Tony Hassan stole the ball for Okemos and pushed forward before Brighton cleared the ball back into the Okemos half. Brighton maintained their pressure on the Okemos goal forcing two additional saves by Steven Topper before the half ended.

Steven Topper stepped up to make a save in the Okemos goal as Brighton continued their attack. Alex Potter cleared the ball out for Okemos but another shot off a free kick was saved by Steven Topper. Ben Skole worked hard on attack but Okemos could not get a shot off as the Brighton defense held firm. Okemos managed some pressure of their own on the Brighton goal but failed to get a shot on target. The teams traded attacks as the game grew more wide open and there was action at both ends of the field. Brighton got another shot from close range but Steven Topper made another fine save in the Okemos net. Brighton kept the pressure on, managing a shot that was wide of the mark before Topper made another save in goal. Alex Potter showed fine dribbling skills getting past two Brighton players before pushing the ball up the left wing. Faread Jamalifaard found Ben Skole who dribbled into the Brighton box before the ball was cleared out of play. Okemos won several free kicks as the game got more physical but could not manage a shot on goal.

Brighton stepped up their own pressure, forcing several corner kicks and throw ins. Steven Topper was called into play often as the ball was played into his box forcing him to clear his lines. Okemos managed their own shot on goal but a nice save in the goal by the Brighton keeper kept things level. Brighton continued their attack and almost scored on a shot that was deflected and hit the cross bar. Alex Potter won the ball for Okemos clearing it out of their box. Steven Topper stepped up again to clear a ball played into the Okemos box as Brighton continued their attack. Ian Sinclair tackled a Brighton player who fell into the box and Brighton were awarded a penalty kick. Kenny Simon (#6) stepped up to take the kick and even though Steven Topper got his fingers on the ball, he could not keep it out of the Okemos net. Okemos pushed forward for the remainder of the match trying to get the equalizer. Faread Jamalifaard crossed the ball into the box but the Brighton keeper scooped it up and cleared it out. Okemos won several free kicks but could not get the ball past the Brighton defense. Tony Hassan and Brandon Brown stepped up for Okemos on the defensive end as Brighton worked on a counter attack. Okemos won a throw in and Faread Jamalifaard headed the ball towards the net but it was eventually scooped up by the Brighton Keeper.

Faithful OHS fans - thanks for all your cheering this fall!

Okemos continued to press for their goal, with Anthony Earley crossing the ball into the box. But the Brighton keeper punched the ball out and a resulting Okemos shot was wide of the net. Ben Skole dribbled past two Brighton players before the ball was cleared out of play. Okemos tried to equalize but Brighton counter attacked forcing Steven Topper to scoop up the ball before launching it back into the Brighton half. Tony Hassan stole the ball for Okemos before playing it forward to Faread Jamaliaard but Brighton cleared it out and the match ended.
